- A Song In The Night
While I was pastor of the Baptist Valley Assembly of God near Cedar Bluff, Virginia, one of the men of the church, Rufus Cornwell, was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. The surgeon was unable to remove the entire tumor, and radiation therapy didn’t destroy the cancer. It spread to his lungs and other organs of his body. He was told that there was nothing more they could do for him except to give him pain medication. One day while visiting with Rufus and his wife, Mildred, she shared with me that when his pain got so sever, Rufus would start singing a hymn. Shortly after that I had the opportunity to witness it for myself. Rufus was dying, in extreme pain, leaving his family, and all that he had. In the midst of the trial, he sang a song in the night. He experienced Job 35:10. He passed a crucial test, and like Job, he did serve the Lord for nothing. He met the conditions for New Testament discipleship (Luke 14:26, 27). He voluntarily gave up all that he had, including his life, and followed Christ. When the test came, his faith proved to be genuine. Singing a song in the night was a normal response to trials and suffering of disciples in the New Testament as well as disciples down through the centuries. Singing a song in the night separates those who overcome the trial from those who are overcome by the trial.
- Celebrate Recovery
In the fall of 2011 a friend shared with me a dream she had in which she saw a young man standing next to a crushed motorcycle. As she looked at him, he began to fade, and she realized that unless God saved him, he would die. This dream served as my inspiration for The Warrior. As I developed the character of James Goodwin, the young man in the dream, I knew that he needed a lot of motivation if he were to give his life to Christ.
