Watch Yourself

By: Ann Doupont

If the blind lead the blind, they both end up in a ditch (Matthew 15:14). Those who have adequate spiritual insight will not follow a blinded leader.

In Hosea 4:6, we find that even God’s people would perish if they lack knowledge. Knowledge, then, is what we need. We need to know some things.

There are two kinds of knowledge, that which is learned and that which is imparted. The type of knowledge that is learned is the type that can cause a person to be puffed up with it (1 Corinthians 8:1). There is also what is known as revelation knowledge (Ephesians 1:17). This type of knowledge is given by God. It is supernatural (not natural).

This is the kind of knowledge I desire and hunger after. Unless the Lord tells me what to do, I don’t know what to do. So, I come before Him daily and I ask. He alone has all the answers that we need and will give us those answers to our many questions if we will simply trust Him for them. (He said that His sheep know His voice and don’t follow the voice of a stranger. We can ask Jesus to be our shepherd. It is then that we shall not want, when He shepherds us. John 10:4; Psalm 23:1.)

I read and meditate on the Scriptures. I spend quality time with Jesus, who is my very best friend. I allow inner changes and corrections to take place, releasing the past and pressing in for the future. That future could be 5 minutes from now. Or, it could be next week, next month, next year or even years from now. My dad was a Boy Scoutmaster. Their motto is “Be prepared.” (That’s a great motto to live by, that of always being prepared, and we can be if we spend adequate quality time with Jesus, taking plenty of “time outs,” even having a daily appointment with Him which I learned to do long ago.)

I listen for His voice, the One that I love, and He speaks to me ever so gently and ever so quietly. I have to be still long enough in order to hear what He has to say. Then, I have “my fix” for the day. Then, I am strengthened and encouraged, and know that everything’s going to be all right. It is then that I know what to do – but not until I’ve heard from Him.

Anyone can have this kind of walk with the Lord – if they’re willing to pay the price. What is that price? Everything. All of my time is His. He has access to all of my finances and my other materials belongings. He owns me. I am not my own. I belong fully to Jesus. (See 1 Corinthians 6:20.)

Some have told me that they’re jealous of me, but they don’t understand the price that I’ve paid. They can have what I have if they’re willing to pay the price that I’ve paid.

There’s no going back to where I’ve been. It’s gone, forever. I couldn’t find it if I tried (and I’m not going to try).

There is peace in this place of resting in Him. The Lord said that when our ways are pleasing to Him that He will make our enemies to be at peace with us (Proverbs 16:7). He doesn’t lie (Numbers 23:19). He meant what He said in His Word.

We need our minds opened to understand the Scriptures (Luke 24:45), being doers of His Word and not hearers only (James 1:22), lest we deceive ourselves. Once we have this understanding of the Scriptures, more responsibility is required by us. To whom much is given, much is required (Luke 12:48).

There is great comfort and encouragement in the Scriptures (Romans 15:5). That’s where all of our answers are found, in studying for ourselves. (Please see 2 Timothy 2:15, KJV.)

As we take heed to ourselves and to the instruction in God’s Word, and continue in doing this, not only will we be saved, but also those who hear us (1 Timothy 4:16). This is not Burger King Christianity, where we can have it our way. No. It’s to be all about Jesus and His way. He is the way to the Father. There is no other. (See John 14:6.)

The first miracle that Jesus did publicly was when He turned the water into wine at the marriage feast in Cana. The people had run out of wine and went to His mother, Mary, asking for help. She simply told them that “whatever He says, do it.” When they did that, a miracle took place but not before then (John 2).

Jesus is the same today as He was then (Hebrews 13:8). As we do whatever He says, we too will see miracles.
