True Freedom

By: Ann Doupont

Whom the Son sets free is free indeed. Jesus said that He is the way, the truth, and the life. It is in knowing the truth that we are made free. We are then free from the lies and deceptions of the enemy.

It is God’s goodness that leads us to repentance. God is indeed good and He will reveal to us what we need to change in order to be free. We are not to use our liberty as an occasion to our flesh, however. We are to daily crucify our fleshly desires, submitting to His desires instead.

True freedom comes through living a surrendered life, not bound by man’s rules and regulations. The traditions of man make the Word of God to be of none effect. Following man’s traditions will cause God’s Word to lose its effect in our lives.

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (or freedom). Where it’s not, there is bondage.

One of the pieces of the armor in Ephesians 6 is the belt of truth. As we put on this piece of our armor, we can ask the Lord whether there is any area of our lives where we’ve been blinded from seeing the truth. If so, we can then allow the Holy Spirit who resides within us to ever so gently make that inner adjustment on the inside of us.

God wants His people free. The devil’s plan is to keep them bound. Each one has a choice in the matter. Freedom is a choice, yet it comes with a cost. Not everyone is going to appreciate those who are truly free. Misery loves company.

Those who are truly free will be talked about. People think there’s something wrong with them because they’re so happy. God knows their hearts. Man judges the outward appearance.

In Hebrews 1, we find a quote from the OT. It says that when we love righteousness and hate wickedness, we will be anointed with the oil of joy. That’s the only kind of love-hate relationship we’re to have. We’re to love being and doing right, and we’re to hate evil and turn from it. Then, we will have joy unspeakable and full of glory – in His presence, where there is fullness of joy.

An old song comes to mind:

Freedom reigns in this place. Showers of mercy and grace, falling on every face….

As we let Jesus reign as Lord and King in our lives, we are freed. As we then continue in the Truth, we are His disciples as the truth will make (and keep) us free.
