It is now the week between Christmas and New Year’s. During this week, there are often more suicides than at any other time of year. I have wondered why this happens. Having attempted suicide before I was saved (and yes, I did that about this time of year), I have some ideas about why this time of year is so difficult for some people. Christmas time is known to be a time for families to get together. For those who have strained family relationships, that can be hard for them. Many have nowhere to go. After Christmas, a person may be thinking about their excessive expenditures. They spent too much on gifts they couldn’t afford. They received gifts they didn’t want. Many people ate too much food and gained weight. They consumed extra sugar, which is known to affect the emotions. A lot of them cast off their God-given restraints during the holiday season, no matter how hard they try. They seem to be affected by the mood of the season. People are reflecting on the year behind them which is about to end and considering what changes they need to make in the year ahead. Some are feeling hopeless, especially if they don’t know the Lord. As we prepare for the year ahead, let’s not forget others who are suffering. Let’s be sure to include them in our plans, being sensitive to their needs. What we do for others will in turn be a blessing in our lives. It’s not that we do things for them for that purpose, but what we sow, we will eventually reap. With love, Ann
