The Scriptures Teach Us to Fast and Pray!

The purpose of fasting is to take our eyes off the things of this world and instead focus on God. Fasting not to be made a subject of display. Fasting is important because of spiritual warfare and it should be accompanied by Confession of sin, mourning, and by praying. Fasting is done to make a right relationship with God, for chastening and humbling of our soul,for overcoming some demonic strongholds, when sorely tempted, when wisdom is earnestly desired , when help and protection are needed , when victory is desired in seemingly impossible situations , when something is earnestly desired from God and the answer has not come through prayer alone , Jesus promised that the Father would bless fasting.

Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered. Psalm 35:13

So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes. Daniel 9:3

Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust. Acts 14:23

And then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Luke 2:37

So that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matthew 6:18

Even now," declares the LORD, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning." Joel 2:12

Fear the LORD your God and serve him. Hold fast to him and take your oaths in his name. Deuteronomy 10:20

And that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Deuteronomy 30:20

David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and went into his house and spent the nights lying on the ground. 2 Samuel 12:16

So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer. Ezra 8:23

Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly.Joel 2:15

But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face. Matthew 6:17
