The Pain of Being Misunderstood

By: Ann Doupont

“Nobody understands me. I think I’ll just go out and….” You fill in the blank.

When a person thinks, or feels, that no one cares what they’re going through, they tend to want to give up. They might have tried and failed in their endeavor more times than they can count. They might feel like they’ll never get it right.

Their hope has been deferred (delayed) and their heart is sick. (See Proverbs 13:12.)

They continued on when hope was gone, but inside of them the pain and grief was deep. They thought it would always be like this until they reached the other side of eternity.

But then, something happened. They met someone (Jesus, with skin on) who cared enough to listen, who was willing to take the time to understand their dilemma and heartache. Hope began to arise in them once again.

Finding another person who truly understands another’s situation seems to be rare. That person prays and sees things through the eyes of the Father. There is no misunderstanding when it’s done this way; that is, when the ministry is done God’s way, when His Spirit is allowed to have free reign.

Let’s be like this for others. Let’s be Jesus with skin on. Let’s really listen with our hearts and seek the Father on their behalf to restore them to wholeness.

If you’ve ever been misunderstood, you know the feeling. If it has happened repeatedly, it can be very painful. Yes, you pray, but you wonder when it’s going to end. You wonder whether you will ever find a person on this earth who will understand your heart.

A week ago, I felt like that. I felt like no one understood what I was going through and I began to weep. A short while later, the phone rang with a long-distance call from one of my best friends. She too was going through some things. Then, the phone rang again with a call from even another state saying that “God told me to call you.”

The Lord knows our address and our phone number. He shows us how much He loves us through things such as this. I hadn’t prayed for people to call me, but God knew what I needed and provided it for me without my having asked for it.

I also then remembered that He had instructed me to not call that first lady who’d called me, saying that she was going to call me. He is so faithful to do what He says He will do.

With the particular situation I was faced with, that wasn’t resolved right away. But yesterday, He brought me yet another friend who did fully understand it and also knew how to pray. Step by step, we will be led out of our problems. It won’t always be like it is now. We won’t always have to feel alone in our dilemma or continue to suffer from the pain of being misunderstood.

There is an end to our problems. We need to continue in faith, to keep on keeping on. It’s by faith and patience that we inherit the promises. (See Hebrews 6:12.) God never said that we’d have the manifestation in the next 5 minutes, but He did say that all of His promises are “yes” and “amen” in Him (2 Corinthians 1:20.)
