We’re all called by God to study the Bible for ourselves, not just to read what others have studied. We’re to be workmen that need not be ashamed (2 Timothy 2:15). Study does take work, but being free from shame is well worth the effort for having studied for ourselves. For those who study for themselves, they will have God’s approval on their lives and also be enabled to rightly divide the Word of truth, and be freed from the errors, lies, and deceptions of the devil, the world, and the flesh. As we study, and pray for understanding, we can see how to apply the Scriptures to our lives and live radically different than the world around us. We learn what God means by love, and love His way, rather than trying it the way we were taught by others or think that it means. As we change the course and direction of our lives through the knowledge and application of God’s Word for our lives, the storms of life will come. We will be tested and tried as we attempt this new understanding, as we embark on this new venture with more of His Word on the inside of us through diligent study and meditation on what is written. We will make mistakes along the way, and we have to be open to the correction that comes through our true friends. Sometimes others will try and correct us when we’re right and they’re not, and we have to also know how to handle that with a right attitude. Know that Jesus is in the boat with you when a storm comes and that He is the Prince of peace, quite capable of stilling the storm like He did for the original 12. Always remember to run to Jesus with your problems, never from Him. As bad as it gets, He will never leave you nor forsake you -- as long as you continue to come to Him. As we truly humble ourselves, wanting His help instead of the help of man, He will point us in the right direction and out of the storm. Paul told the Corinthian church that there is no temptation taken them but such as is common to man, but that God will make a way of escape so that they’re able to bear it (1 Corinthians 10:13). You are not alone. What you are experiencing, others also have, and there is a way out. It’s by drawing closer to the Lord and hearing His voice. When the Lord is our Shepherd, and we are the sheep of His pasture, it is then that we shall not be in want (Psalm 23:1). He will then provide all that we need, and even more. It starts with our willingness to study and follows with the purpose for which God intended. His purpose is for our freedom - to be all that He intended for us to be. Whom the Son sets free is free indeed - and it’s the truth that makes us free. We are His disciples if we will but continue in the truth (John 8:31-32). That’s what it’s all about, the truth that makes us free. Jesus is the ... truth ... (John 14:6) and the great Liberator of all.
