Sin in the Face of God

“grace provides forgiveness for sin not tolerance of sin” 2/3/05 ks

The Call To Righteousness
(all scripture is taken from the King James version)

I want to quote to you a reading I found in The Master Plan of Evangelism by Robert E. Coleman. This is what he wrote: “One must ask why are so many professed Christians today stunted in their growth and ineffectual in their witness? Or to put the question in its larger context, why is the contemporary church so frustrated in its witness to the world? Is it not because among the clergy and laity alike there is a general indifference to the commands of God, or at least, a kind of contented complacency with mediocrity? Where is the obedience of the cross? Indeed, it would appear that the teachings of Christ regarding self-denial and dedication have been replaced by a sort of respectable “do-as-you-please” philosophy of expediency. The great tragedy is that little is being done to correct the situation, even by those who realize that this is happening. Certainly the need of the hour is not for despair but for action.”

I have pondered greatly why it is that we, as Christians, with the Bible to instruct us, continue to walk in sin. What would make the difference in our growth as children of God that would cause us to stop sinning in the face of God?

I believe as a church body that we have become very complacent Christians. And if the body of Christ is made up of each one of us, then it makes sense that we, as individuals, need to rise above complacency and become responsible for our own walk and relationship with Christ. Then and only then will the body as a whole be healthy revering God and doing as He commands

And revering God, I believe, is the key to moving away from complacency and irreverence and moving toward the much needed fear of the Lord. I want to take a look at fear or reverence of the Lord today.

I think many of us have trouble laying down the sin in our lives simply because we have little reverence of God. All through Romans we are told that our old man has died to sin. If that is the case, then why do we continue to sin? One reason, I believe, is that we choose to sin and I think it is important that we look honestly at ourselves and at our reasons & excuses for continuing to choose to sin.

The Bible says in Heb 10:26-27 “For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.”

Once we know what sin is, we have no more excuse to sin. Once we know what sin is,sin then becomes a choice that we make. And I believe that the willingness to continue in sin could be based on the fact that we no longer fear God, as in reverence towards Him. Is it possible we no longer believe that a certain fearful expectation of judgment and fiery indignation could fall upon any one of us who chooses to continue in sin?

There are two types of fear. However, if we look up the word fear in Webster’s dictionary we will find only one type of fear. Webster’s says: “fear is 1a) a panic or distress caused by a real or impending danger, pain”. I guess the question that is easy to see is this: If we really feared impending danger from God upon us when we sin, would we sin? Or have we become complacent in our sins, not really believing that the judgment of God could fall upon us?

Eph 2:19 says, “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God”. Do you realize the fact that Webster’s dictionary has only one type of fear. It neglects something that is very important, that is imperative to our relationship with God. And that is spiritual fear. The Bible speaks of spiritual fear and uses it to denote that which you reverence, revere or hold in awe. Did you make the connection here? Isn’t it interesting that the world’s resource for words does not include the meaning of the word fear that is of the utmost importance to us who are no longer of this world, not only to us but to our relationship with God.

Vine’s Dictionary of New Testament Words delivers unto us the scriptural meaning of fear. And since we are aliens to this world and our home is in heaven perhaps we should submit not to the worlds definition of fear but to the biblical view of fear. However, we are going to look at biblical passages today that will show you, remind you of both types of fear. I think that as we draw closer to God in our fellowship and understanding of Him, we naturally become more interested in not grieving Him, our hearts cry out, yearning to never grieve our Master. An important aspect of not grieving God would be to give up our sins. If we truly understand what it is to fear God, both from fear of His judgment and from awe or reverence of Him, then we will earnestly desire to not sin before Him. I believe that if we saw the immediate judgment of God as we see it in the Old Testament, we would be way less likely to continue in sin. If we are walking in continual sin in our lives…I’d have to suggest that we do not understand God, nor do we fear Him. I hope today that through this message we will come to a new understanding of God; and that we will learn the importance of fearing God, as in reverence of Him or revering Him. When God becomes more important than our sins, they (the sins) tend to fall away.

The Greek word for fear is: “Phobos” 1) it first had the meaning of flight, that which is caused by being scared, then, that which may cause flight..and secondly 2) reverential fear of God, as a controlling motive of the life, in matters spiritual and moral, not a mere fear of His power and righteous retribution, but a wholesome dread of displeasing Him, a fear which banishes the terror that shrinks from His presence. And which influences the disposition and attitude of one whose circumstances are guided by trust in God, through the indwelling Spirit of God.” Another word for fear used in the Bible is: 2) “Eulabeia”. This type of fear signifies firstly caution, then, reverence, godly fear but especially holy fear, “that mingled fear and love which, combined, constitute the piety (piety in Websters means quality of being) of man toward God. And 3) “Eulabeomai: signifies to act with the reverence produced by holy fear, moved with godly fear”.

The OT places its emphasis on the fear (phobos) while the NT places its emphasis on the love (eulabeia and eulabeomai). In other words, reverence through love as opposed to reverence through fear. “Although there was a love in the fear of God’s saints then, there must be fear in their love now”. Listen to that again,…there must be fear in their love now. (Vine’s Dictionary of NT words)

In preparing this I felt the Lord gave me this word for us: “I would that you not sin out of reverence to Me than to not sin because you are afraid of Me. But either way My judgment is swift in that day when it comes”

In that day when it comes!
Lets talk about that day when it comes.

Throughout biblical history we can see that God has delivered His judgment in two ways: One way was through delayed judgment and the other was through immediate judgment. Some of the more obvious delayed judgments would be, of course, Noah and the flood. In Gen 6:13 God said to Noah: "…The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth”.
In Gen 6:17 God says, “And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die”. Indeed we see delayed judgment as the earth was approximately 1656 years old at the time of the flood.

Another example of God’s delayed judgment upon us is the second coming of Christ. This judgment we have not see yet we know it will come for Rev 1:7 tells us
“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen”.
Heb 10:30-31 God said "For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

And I submit to you that indeed Christ will return and the world will be judged and those who continue to walk in sin will be judged! I remind you again that the Bible says in Heb 10:26-27 “ For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

And Rom 2:23-25 says “Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God? 24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written. 25 For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision”.

Another delayed judgment of God came upon Achan. Let’s look at: Josh 6:2, “And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour.” And instructed Joshua to instruct the men to keep away from the devoted things, so that they would not bring about their own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise they would make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it. But the children of Israel committed a trespass regarding the accursed things, for Achan, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the LORD burned against the children of Israel. And when Joshua sent men to take the city of Ai, they were beaten badly because of the disobedience of one man in doing that which God had strictly forbidden, then the entire nation was condemned. And God brought judgment upon Achan and his family by bringing immediate death upon them.

If we knew that the judgment of God would come upon us immediately for offenses against Him, would we continue to choose do the things we do?

In all these examples we have seen how God’s judgment was delayed. I believe that we are living in delayed judgment times. We will see judgment and those who choose to continue to walk in sin when they have the knowledge against it will be judged.

In the story of Joshua and Ai, we see that God deemed the entire camp accursed because there was sin in the camp. God will not bless sin in the camp and there is sin in our camp and it is time to deal with it if you wish to see the mighty movement of God upon us. We are called to be in unity in the spirit, but if only one of us walks in sin, then the entire camp is accursed. 1 Cor 5:6-8 says, “Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? 7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: 8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth”. (leaven=evil, sin).

God said, Get up! Sanctify thyself! And I say to you…Get up! Sanctify thyself! Prepare yourselves for the way of the Lord. He will come and His Spirit will move among us but we must get the sin out of our camp!

Let’s take a look now at examples of immediate judgment. As we listen to these accounts of immediate judgment by God upon sin let’s ask ourselves this question:

If the judgment of God would come upon us swiftly and immediately as it does in the following examples, would we continue to walk in sin, to say what we say, to do what we do, to treat others as we treat them, to set God aside while we live our life thinking that in the end we will receive the inheritance He has given us, regardless of whether we heed His word or not? Or would we heed the word of God and be faithful to the end to what it says?

In the OT we see God’s judgment upon man’s sin frequently. God had swift and immediate judgment upon those men who had knowledge of sin and chose to sin anyway.
Numbers 12:1-10 tells us about Miriam who spoke against God’s prophet, Moses. Let’s see what it says: “And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman. 2 And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it. 3(Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.) 4 And the LORD spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out. 5 And the LORD came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth. 6 And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. 7 My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house. 8 With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? 9 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them; and he departed. 10 And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous”.

Immediate judgment for the sin of speaking against another. How often are we guilty of speaking against another? If God’s judgment were to fall upon us immediately, would we do so?

In Lev. 10:1-3 we read about Nadab & Abihu, these two young men were guilty of a presumptuous and unwarranted intrusion into a sacred office which did not belong to them but belonged to Moses. Starting at chapter 10, verse 1, reading through verse 3. “And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not. 2 And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. 3 Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the LORD spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified.”

Note, God hath said, by those who come near Me, I must be regarded as holy. Do you regard God as holy? Holy enough to revere Him? Holy enough to honor Him by getting the sin out of your life?

Another example of the immediate judgment of God is found in Gen 19:12-17; 24-26, when God’s angels paid a visit to Lot in the city of Sodom. They said to Lot:, "Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: 13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it. 14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.” Complacent?
“And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.
16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. 17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.”
24Then the LORD rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the LORD out of the heavens. 26So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 27But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt”.

Here we see that, once again, sin in the camp brought judgment upon the entire camp. But I want to point out is the immediate judgment which befell Lot’s wife. God brought upon her immediate judgment for looking back and not wanting to leave the known ways of the evil world she lived, and exchange them for the wonderful blessings of God.

Do you have one foot in both worlds…living in and attracted to this world, yet torn and desiring to let go of this world and give yourself completely to God? Do you find yourself looking back? If God’s judgment was immediate, would you look back?

How about Ananias & Sapphira? In Acts 5:1-11 Immediate judgment certainly fell upon them. And do you think if they believed the judgment of God could fall upon them that they would have chosen to sin against Him? Here’s the story:

“But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. 3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. 5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. 6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him. 7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. 8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. 9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. 10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. 11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things”.

Immediate judgment once again. If immediate judgment of God were to fall upon us would continue to willfully sin in the face of God?

In Num 16:1-14 we see where rebellion by Korah and some men who rose up against Moses and Aaron led to immediate judgment of those in rebellion. Korah and his followers came to Moses one day and said, “who do you think you are, trying to set yourself above us?” So Moses said, “Korah you and your 250 followers take your censors and meet me in front of the tent of meeting and God will appear and choose between the two of us.” The next door God appeared in the doorway of the tent and told Moses to separate himself from Korah and his group. And the ground opened up and swallowed Korah and his group and the ground swallowed them alive and took them straight to Sheol. Their families, children…all of them. God’s judgment was swift and fast.

The sin of grumbling. James 5:9 says. “Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.”

The sin of jealousy & exalting yourself above others, Are you a grumbler and complainer? Prideful, arrogant and exalting yourself above others? God hates our grumbling and complaining. God hates our pride. Would you be prideful and a grumbler if God would immediately bring judgment upon you?

What do you think now? Is it not apparent that we have become complacent before our God? To sin and continue in sin despite His Word and His warnings? Are we in rebellion to God? Do we take lightly His commands and think we don’t need to heed them? Remembering the immediate judgment of Korah and his companions and how the earth opened up to swallow them up might help us to choose to say NO to sin in our lives.

Here’s a quick and immediate judgment of God for disobedience. 2 Sam 6:6-7 “And when they came to Nachon's threshing floor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it. 7 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.” The ark was holy and never to be touched. Uzzah touched it. God took his life immediately.

How about Pharoah who repeatedly denied God’s call to let the Israelites go? And when 10 plagues did not soften Pharoah’s heart, God hardened Pharoah’s heart and had all the first born killed, including Pharoah’s son. Judgment was immediate and delayed in this case, wasn’t it?

Ezekial 18:20 says “the soul that sinneth, it shall die”. Remember the Irealites and their constant trek from belief to unbelief? Heb 3:16-19 tells us, “So we see they could not enter in because of unbelief.” Unbelief in what? Unbelief in God’s word to be what it says it is? Do you work out your own plans because you lack trust and faith in God and His Word? Do we really believe God and His Word? Do you believe there will be judgment for willful sin?

The Bible says there will be those among us that will hear God say, “depart from Me I never knew you”. and Rom 10:17 says, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” I submit to you that not only do we need to have faith in Christ but in what Christ says also. Its not enough to believe in God or to believe in Christ-Satan believes and his end is written Rev 20:10, “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”

“So shall be those who do not turn back from their sins.
Don’t take obedience to God lightly. If God is speaking to you about something, don’t just listen….answer Him.

One of the names for believers in the bible is Holy brethren. Holy means: ”set apart for God” and indicates our position in Christ while brethren indicates our relationship to Christ. We are partakers of a heavenly glory. And that means we are Partners/sharers “ in the heavenly glory to come and we must be faithful to the end. Faithful how? Faithful to honor, revere and hold our God in awe. Faithful to choose to step away from sin to follow God’s laws. For Heb 6:4-6 says “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame”.

Don’t take the judgment of God lightly. Don’t be complacent to walk in continual sin thinking God winks at it. Sin is sin and God hates sin.

Adrian Rogers once told a story about generations who laughed at Noah and his preaching about the flood to come. And just because they did not see it coming they did not believe it and they became complacent, mocking Noah and his preaching and were unwilling to believe God would really bring judgment upon them because in four generations they had not seen judgment yet. They did not believe because of the length of time for Gods judgment to be administered. But it did come. Judgment was no less real or true just because of the length of time between sin and judgment

Brethren, we must hold fast, remain steadfast as 2 Tim 1:13-14 says: “Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us”.

Hold fast to the word of God and to the fact that God’s judgment will come. Think about this…if we were to see the immediate hand of judgment from God would it change our decisions and actions?

However, do not fear, as in be afraid, of that judgment for God has said His grace is sufficient for thee. We are saved by grace. And it IS sufficient, but God’s word is full of IF’s. And it’s time to take God seriously. IF we fear God in the NT sense of the word fear, we will love Him so much we would never want to grieve Him. We would grow closer and closer to Him, getting to know Him better and better and we would desire, crave His presence in our lives. If we revere Him, be in awe of Him, that will create such a love in us for Him that we would be unwilling to sin against Him. As the words to a song says, “The Lord is gracious and compassionate. Slow to anger and rich in love”. It is His great mercy and love for us that brings a harsh message to the church of today to be heard before it is too late for our repentance. He loves us so much He desires that none should perish. Open your ears to hear!

Heb 3:12 “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God”.

Make no mistake-sin separates you from God!!! There may be pleasure in sin for a season but do you know how long that season will be? And what will come at the end of that season?

Our blessed Father has made a way for us to return to Him. So if you are in sin or have been straying from Him and His ways…..God has opened the door and the way back to Him through repentance. Come back to Him now. He said, Get up! Sanctify thyself!”

The point I’m trying to make is not that we will die for disobedience or that we will loose our salvation, but that there is a price for disobedience and if we would live under God’s immediate judgment would we not be inclined to do as He asks of us, putting off our own immediate gratification for the eternal promise? God tempts no one. For James 1:14 says, “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed”.

Remember God said, “I would that you not sin out of reverence to Me than to not sin because you are afraid of Me, but either way My judgment is swift in that day when it comes”.

God is always here. He is always willing. He is longsuffering and patient that you will come to Him and repent. With OT fear I beg you: Don’t wait for you know not the day/hour that judgment will come. With NT love I beg you: Set your heart right with God now, today.

Ask God’s forgiveness and walk away today fresh, renewed, refilled in Him. Open your heart up to Him, declare your love for Him and tell Him how much you cherish and adore Him. When you pour out your love to Him you will be filled with remorse for your departing from Him and His ways and you will beg His forgiveness, you will repent and you will be changed. You will walk away a true child of the King, forgiven, and with the hope of the glory to come promised to His children.

(do you think complacency becomes apostasy? Mat. 13:33 parable certainly rings true in light of that question, doesn’t it?

Study questions:

1) Why is it that we, as Christians, with the Bible to instruct us, continue to walk in sin?
