Through a recovery program I once attended, we were taught that all alcoholics have problems. I therefore surmised that only alcoholics have problems. In telling my mother that, she gently corrected me by saying that everyone has problems. Oh, I didn’t know that. A few years ago, I wrote that “Problems are only puzzles to be solved.” It all has to do with our attitude and our outlook about them. We can either think of our situation as a challenge and puzzle to be solved, which means that there is a solution. Or, we could lose hope and give up trying (not a good thing to do). God has the answer to every challenge we will ever face in this life. Just as it is in working a puzzle, which requires thought, so is it with finding the answers to what we’re experiencing. God told us to think on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and having a good report. The battles we face have to do with our thoughts. The mind is the battleground. That’s where we’ll either win or lose the battle. As we think God’s thoughts after Him, we will win. We need to pull down the strong holds of the enemy (which may have gotten into our imaginations) by using God’s Word, the sword of the Spirit, and defeat the enemy of our soul. Just as it took a lot of work on my part to recover from alcoholism all those years ago, so is it in recovering in other areas of our lives. It takes time and effort on our part to change our thoughts and attitudes from what they were before we were saved to what can be a joy-filled life. God has the answers to everything. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. He came to give us life and that life more abundantly. However, it’s up to each of us to decide which path to take. Narrow is the path that leads to eternal life and few there be that find it. Seek and you shall find.
