Profit and Loss

By: Ann Doupont

In business, figuring the profit or loss of a company is based mostly on three elements - that of assets (what we have), income (what comes in), and expenses (what goes out).

Our households are also based on this same principle. We have assets (material belongings). We have income and we have expenses. If our outgo exceeds our income, we suffer loss. When we have had such a loss, it is wise to evaluate what has happened and to make adjustments in our money handling so that loss will not continue to occur.

Nearly everything in this life costs something. Unless there is some excess of funds in your life, finding ways of streamlining your expenditures is needed in these days of a downsized economy.

We are called to be wise stewards of what has been entrusted to us (Luke 12:42). Seeking God for His plans for what we have been given is what will carry us through this season. The Lord is totally trustworthy and He will give us the wisdom we need as ask Him for it (James 1:5).

What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul? These words of Jesus found in three of the four gospels bring stark reality to us when we take the time to really think about what He said. What is most important is not how much money we have, or don’t have, but how prosperous we are in our souls. (See also 3 John 2.)

All things are permissible but not all things are beneficial (1 Corinthians 10:23). Our souls will live on forever. Some say that the soul is the mind, the will, and the emotions. But upon careful study of the scriptures and in evaluating the original languages in which the Bible was written, we can find that the soul of man is much more than the mind, the will, and the emotions. It encompasses all of the invisible part of our being. This is made clear when we read that God breathed and Adam being a living soul (Genesis 2:7).

Man is actually a two-part being - that of soul (the invisible part) and body (the visible part). Just as within the body there are many parts, so are there many parts within the soul. Within the soul are the mind, and the will, and the emotions (which are actually within the heart, or core, of his being). Also within the soul are the memories, the subconscious, the conscious thoughts, as well as the spirit (the rational part of the soul).

He who wins souls is wise (Proverbs 11:30). In order to know how to win souls, it would seem that we need to understand what a soul is. Therefore, we are to have study (2 Timothy 2:15).

The traditions of man make the Word of God to be of no effect (Matthew 15:6). What is happening in many arenas of Christendom in the 21st century is not working. Some of the teachings are manmade and are not producing God’s desired results. There is no long-term profit in them (the salvation of souls for all eternity). There is great loss in the form of wasted time and effort.

Bodily exercise profits little, but godliness profits unto all things (1 Timothy 4:8). As we find out from God what this means and we amend our thoughts to becoming godly ones, we will have the true profit in our lives which will last forever.
