Prayer Changes Things! Prayers in the book of Psalms

By: Jennifer Hallmark

Debra was driving on the interstate with Margie on the way to a seminar on office improvement. It was an all day event of learning new skills and brushing up on old ones.

“Margie,” Debra asked. “Sometimes I feel like I get stuck. You know, like when I pray. I know you said it was just talking to God but sometimes it is difficult.”

“I understand what you are saying. We all, as Christians, go through seasons where we feel we can’t pray or study the Bible or learn anything. The reasons behind it can be anything from stress to difficult circumstances to undealt with issues or sin.”

“What can I do to get past this “prayer” block I seem to have?” Debra questioned.

“One thing that helps me is to look at the book of Psalms in the Old Testament.”

“I thought “psalms” meant songs. How will that help?”

“I see you remember our Sunday school lesson last week. Yes, it does mean songs but this book is full of prayers and laments of how David and others handled life. Let me share a part of one of my favorites, Psalm 5.

“Listen, God! Please, pay attention! Can you make sense of these ramblings, my groans and cries? King-God, I need your help. Every morning you’ll hear me at it again. Every morning I lay out the pieces of my life on your altar and watch for fire to descend.” verses 1-3 The Message Bible.

“In this Psalm, David is praying to God about his struggle to pray. You will notice though, that he does not give up but says he will continue to pray everyday and that he needs God’s help.”

“David was a King and struggled to pray? That makes me feel better,” Debra said.

“There is another prayer we can pray in Psalms 19 verse 14,” Margie said as she flipped a few pages over in her Bible.

“These are the words in my mouth; these are what I chew on and pray. Accept them when I place them on the morning altar, O God, My Altar-Rock, God, Priest-of-My-Altar.” The Message Bible

“Here we see David asking God to accept his prayers though he knows they are not perfect. We need to realize that God sees our heart and ask Him to help us to translate that into words. The great thing about God is that even if we only groan or cry, He hears us and understands.”

“Yes and lately that seems to be what I am best at,” Debra said, with a smile. “Thank you God that you hear and understand me, especially when I struggle.”

“Hey there is our exit,” Margie called out. “Now we better pray that we can understand what they are going to be teaching at the seminar today…”
