Prayer Changes Things! Lifting Up Others

By: Jennifer Hallmark

“I want to help,” Debra said suddenly, one Thursday morning.

She was sitting with Margie, her co-worker at the nearby McDonalds on their lunch break.

“Who do you want to help?” Margie asked. “I thought you have seen preoccupied this morning.”
“Our Pastor’s wife. I have noticed she is tired and stressed lately. I mean, she works a job and has a family, does a lot at the church and helps with the women’s ministry. But what can I do?”
“There are several things that come to mind but let me share a story with you first. Have you ever heard of Aaron and Hur?”
“It doesn’t sound familiar. Sounds like Bible names though,” Debra replied.

She had been a Christian less than a year and realized that she still had so much to learn.

“You remember Moses and the parting of the Red Sea?”
“Yes.”
“Well, Aaron was his brother and the priest at that time for God’s people. Hur was one of his assistants along with Joshua.”

Margie pulled her slim sized Message Bible out of her purse.

“The story is in Exodus 17.”

“And Moses said to Joshua, ‘Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.’ So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. So Joshua defeated Amalek…” Exodus 17:8-13.

“In this story, Moses had an important part to play in the battle against Amalek. He was to hold up the rod of God so they were assured victory. But Moses was human and tired after a while. That is where Aaron and Hur came in. They supported him so he could do what he was supposed to do.”
“The same way I want to support our Pastor’s wife!’
“In some ways, this could be a picture of intercessory prayer. The way Aaron and Hur held up Moses hands is the way we support others in prayer. The part we play is important as our prayers help others, like your Pastor’s wife accomplish her purpose.”
“I can start praying for her job and the women’s ministry. And even her marriage!” Debra exclaimed.
“Yes, those are all good. You could occasionally ask her if she has any special prayer requests. And don’t forget the physical things you can do for her like seeing if she needs help at church, taking her to lunch or out for coffee and just being encouraging and positive around her and her family.”
“I can do that,” Debra agreed. “I think I’ll run in the drug store this evening and buy her an encouraging card to mail to her.”
“Then you will be holding up her hands, just like Aaron and Hur…” Margie added.
