God's Will to Heal

By: Ann Doupont

Is it God’s will to heal everyone, or does He choose to heal only certain people? It would be pretty hard to believe for healing if I thought that there are certain people He won’t heal.

Many have thought to believe that Paul’s thorn in the flesh was a physical ailment and that God refused to heal Paul. They then think that because of this, God may not want to heal them. Looking at 2 Corinthians 12:7 which speaks of this “thorn in the flesh,” we can see that Paul did not ask for healing. He asked for the thorn to be removed to which God replied that His grace is sufficient for Paul (to endure the “thorn”).

Jesus, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8) went about doing good (not bad, but good) and healing all…. (See Acts 10:38.) The word “all” is one of my favorite words. It includes everything and everyone. Since Jesus who is always the same heals all, it would stand to reason that He would heal Paul, had Paul asked for healing.

In Galatians 6:11, we find Paul talking about such a large letter he had written with his own hand. Without going into the original language, this could appear to mean that he wrote large letters because of a possible eye problem. However, when we do look at the Greek language in which this letter was written, we then see what it really means.

The word translated “large” is referring to “a quantitive form” or how much Paul was writing. The word translated “letter” is talking about a “note, letter, epistle, or book.” In other words, what Paul was saying here had to do with the length of the book of Galatians written with his own hand. Looking at the beginning of Galatians, we can see that it was written only by Paul whereas some of the other epistles included others in their writing.

What about Job’s boils? Looking at the end of the book of Job (chapter 42), we see that Job was healed. In fact, he was blessed with double what he had before his trials.

God does not refuse to heal His people. I have not found anywhere in scripture where He said “no” to a person seeking Him for healing.

There are many reasons (hindrances) why some people are not healed. But, it’s not because of God being unwilling or unable to heal them. If your child was sick, wouldn’t you do everything in your power to help them get well? Of course you would. How much more does our heavenly Father want to help (and heal) His children! As we sincerely ask the Lord to show us anything hindering our healing and wait in His presence for the answer and amend what He shows us to amend, our healing can and will come.

There are those who don’t want to be healed, for various reasons. There are others who don’t believe in divine healing, or that God will heal them. Others are in denial that there’s anything wrong with them. Still others are unwilling to change things in their lives.

Stress is known to be a major factor in causing sickness. Lack of adequate rest, sleep, water, exercise, and improper food intake can hinder a person’s healing. We need to work with God and not against Him for our healing.

His Word is medicine to all our flesh. (See Proverbs 4:20-22.) As take our “medicine” by reading it, studying, meditating on it, understanding it and doing it, not only will healing result but others will also take note.

There will be afflictions that come for the Word’s sake (Mark 4:17). Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord promised to deliver us out of them all (Psalm 34:17). If we’re afflicted, James tells us to pray (James 5:13). If sick, we’re to call on the elders to pray the prayer of faith (verse 14).

There is a difference between an affliction and a sickness. We need to know the difference. We need to know if what we’re suffering is an affliction or a sickness, so that we’ll know how to pray correctly. As we seek the One who has all of the answers, He will let us know what it is that we’re suffering so that we will know how to handle it.

I am firmly persuaded that it is God’s will to heal His people, but not all will be healed just as it is His will that all be saved, but not all will be saved.
