Genie God?

By: Cindy Cyprus

We live in a world where earthly success seems to be a living necessity. A dream house. A new car. A white-collar job. The newest gadgets. Vacation trips.

Though they all seem great and harmless to have, many people, including Christians, have the intention to seek God only to have these things. This is where the idea of "Genie God" is created by people. Many think that by praying, they will be beneficiaries of God's blessings, according to what they desire. Ask yourself. What do you pray for? "Lord please give me this." "Lord, please give me that. I'll be happy and I'll praise you again." It's funny that people tend to be conditional when it comes to God. But He said in Luke 19:40 (WEB),

"He answered them, "I tell you that if these were silent, the stones would cry out."

God has dominion over every living creature and He doesn't need our conditional offers. He can simply command the stick and stones to praise Him! So what makes us think that we can hand Him a deal?

Materialistic worship is a false foundation of our faith. Instead of praising God for what He will potentially give, think about what He has already given. He already offered the most important gift of all--which is salvation through Christ and eternal life--what more can we ask for?

That way, we can always find contentment on the things we have on earth. After all, material things will perish and worldly success is temporary. What's important is we parallel our desires with God's will. The more we cling to the Lord, the less we will lust for other things.

"But first be concerned about God's kingdom and his righteousness, and all of these things will be provided for you as well." Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

"He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?" Romans 8:32 (NIV)

God knows our need more than us. He knows when and what to give. As long as you place your trust in Christ, you need not to be anxious about anything. Keep in mind that He never breaks His promises. Find confidence in the fact that He will provide. He will always provide. Praise unconditionally. Praise Him for what He has already done.
