GUNS, GUNS, and MORE GUNS

By: Willetta Pilcher

Another shooting. Children killing children! People killing people! When will it all stop? Why? What can we do? Oh, I know... get rid of the guns... then... we won't have anymore killing! Yeah, right! According to one psychiatrist that spoke over television recently, people don't kill anymore, except by the use of a gun. Perhaps he should explain to me why we just buried my great-nephew. He met his death with a knife in his heart from an assailant he did not know...

We send our children to school to learn math, history, reading and writing. The lessons are repeated over and over. The content of their lessons is increased as they learn by repetition and practice. We applaud their accomplishments and celebrate their graduation. Then it is off to college for more of the same.

In turn, we Americans set ourselves and our children before the television night after night for entertainment. The lessons of gun power and violence are repeated over and over. We buy toy guns for our kids so they can pretend to shoot each other and practice in their play. Later, we give them computer games that infect them with the thrill of the power of control, all at the push of a button. The battle cry becomes, "Blow the sucker up!"

We furnish the money so they can buy music with messages of murder, rape, incest and everything evil imaginable and unimaginable. We kill our babies in the womb so we won't have to be bothered with unwanted children. And we think it doesn't make an impression on anyone?

We are schooled well in violence... and when society.... begins to put into practice what has been taught, we are shocked and ask ourselves "How?"¯ and "Why?" How can we be so blind? An amoral society is a society without morals and without moral restraint. With it you have anarchy not freedom.

Getting rid of the guns is not the answer. Guns do not shoot themselves. Interestingly, the Bible has a verse about that as well. Isaiah 10:15 (NLT) says, "Can the ax boast greater power than the person who uses it? Is the saw greater than the person who saws? Can a whip strike unless a hand is moving it? Can a cane walk by itself?"¯ And we might add, without doing harm to the text, "Can a gun shoot itself?"¯

President Bush has 'hit the nail on the head' when he says we must teach our children to value life, instruct them in moral values and build their character through discipline. As parents, we must start taking our God given responsibility for the training of our children. We must start talking to our children while they are tiny and instilling into their minds the character traits that we desire them to manifest, as they grow older. However, we must first start disciplining ourselves, forget our mad dash for the almighty dollar and come to grips with what is really important in life. What does money matter when we have to bury our children in their name brand jeans?

It is time for us to go back to the basics, back to the original child-training manual. Yes, you guessed it right. We must go back to the Bible where we are instructed to love, teach, train, correct, chasten, nurture, and admonish but not provoke our children. Our churches must start teaching something besides religious gibberish. We must set the example by our own adherence to moral values and responsible self-discipline. Our children are not to blame. We adults are the ones to blame.
