Foods and Their Effects

By: Ann Doupont

There are many things I could write about, as writing comes easily to me since having had a lot of practice. However, what I really want to share with you is what the Lord wants shared, as I’m not my own but have been bought with a price, the precious shed blood of Jesus. (See 1 Corinthians 6:20.)

He spoke to me this morning to write about the correlation or connection between natural, physical food and that of spiritual food and their effects in our lives. Most of us know that our bodies were not made for junk food. It’s not that many of us have been perfected in making the right food choices, but we do know what’s good for us and what is not. We also know that if we eat too much, we will gain weight.

In these end times, there are false teachers. This was prophesied long ago. (See 2 Peter 2:1.) If we listen to them long enough and “eat” their words as though they were true, they will become a part of us. These words will change the way we think, what we believe, and how we act. How important is it then that we listen to the truth which has the capability of making us free.

Some of us need to be spiritually cleansed from having listened to these inaccurate teachings, looking to the Lord for His way out of our difficulties. If something doesn’t seem right to our spirits, it probably isn’t right.

Anything that brings bondage is not of the truth as Jesus is the …truth…(John 14:6). It is in knowing the truth that we are then made free (John 8:32). There are lies, deceptions, and errors taught everywhere…in the news, on television, the Internet, on the job, in the marketplace, and God forbid, even in our churches. These things are dragged in by unwary ministers who haven’t been cleansed before stepping into the pulpits and they then speak what they’ve heard from people rather than from the Lord.

Conviction of sin, and repentance from it, is what will liberate us to be all that God has for us to be. Man’s teachings and doctrine based on the natural way of thinking will make a bad situation even worse. Some have given heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils (1 Timothy 4:1).

Each of us has a choice in what we do with each of our 24 hours a day. No one can make that decision for us. There are consequences for what we do. What we sow, we shall reap (Galatians 6:7). When we sow to the flesh, we will reap corruption (verse 8). Sowing to the Spirit however, we will reap life everlasting (verse 9).

A good, healthy diet will help prolong your life. Eating yesterday’s manna and a diet of stale crumbs will make you sick. Still, you have a choice. No one can make that decision for you, not even God. He will help you with your choices in life, if asked (James 1:5), but ultimately what will be is up to you.

You may have been unhappy for a very long time. That can change if you make the decision to change it. The psalmist David once said that “happy is that people whose God is the Lord.” (See Psalm 144:15.) You can be happy. If God is your Lord (in charge of your life), and your heart is bowed to Him constantly, you will be happy.

What we eat, both spiritually and physically, will help to determine our level of health. Putting Jesus first day by day, eating only those things which were created by Him for food, will bless you more than you’ve ever been blessed before. You will be stronger and healthier than before and along with this, your joy level will also increase. By the way, the word “joy” found in the list of the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23 comes from the Greek word meaning “calm delight.” (See Strong’s #5479.)

Change can come through you, but first it must come in you. If it’s true that “you are what you eat,” you might want to take a time out to think about what you’ve been eating (both spiritually and physically) and amend those things which have been robbing you of your strength and health.

Mary and Martha had choices. It is said that Mary “chose” what is better and it shall not be taken from her. She chose to sit at the feet of Jesus. (See Luke 10:39, 42.) So can you.
