There is a spiritual aspect to everything that happens in this world. For example, when two people are married in the physical realm, they become “one flesh” in the spiritual realm. And when someone dies to sin and is made alive in Christ in the physical realm (meaning: when they become a Christian), they die to sin and are made alive --today, and forever-- in the spiritual realm. In the same way, the 2008 election has both a physical and a spiritual aspect. This, in my opinion, is why so many Christians are struggling over the election results---they are looking at the spiritual consequences of this election and are taken aback by them. In their desire to express that dismay, some Christians have responded to the election in a way that may have offended others, or that sounds like they’ve lost their minds. Others have chosen to remain silent, partly because it’s hard to explain the spiritual (which is unseen and intangible) and partly because they self-censor due to the political correctness of our day. Such responses don’t advance the cause of Jesus Christ. We must speak out, and do so in a thoughtful and loving manner. This is my humble attempt at doing just that… First, I do not believe that genuine Christians think the President-elect is “a bad guy who wants to destroy our country;” neither do I believe that Christians have lost faith in God’s control. Christians know God is in control. And we know that President-elect Obama wants to do right by his country. What Christians are concerned about are the spiritual consequences of electing a liberal President (with socialistic tendencies.) We believe such policies will harm our ability to spread the Gospel and protect the Nation of Israel: •Liberal policies take away the freedoms that allow for the spread of the Gospel Message. The record shows that President Obama will govern left of center. In so doing, he will make our spiritual work much harder than it already is. We have already seen our freedom of speech erode through judicial mandates (such as forbidding teachers to talk about their faith in schools,) and legislation (like changes to the IRS code that forbids Christian churches from making political statements.) We have seen our ability to spread the Gospel shrink through Presidential policies (like the soon-to-be-enacted energy policies that will make travel expenses soar,) and tax hikes that take our hard-earned money and “redistribute it” to the Government’s pet projects rather than going to our pet projects (like caring for the poor, and getting out the truth that Jesus died to save us from a fate worse than death.) •Liberal policies that limit our influence around the world (including the Middle East) make it harder to spread the Gospel “to all nations.” The war in Iraq has given us great opportunities to share the reality of Christ’s Salvation in so many ways. Through it, men, women, and children have been freed from human slavery and subjugation and the devil’s slavery and subjugation. In addition, our influence in that region has made it possible for us to better defend the Nation of Israel. Anyone with even a limited about of Biblical theology knows that those who stand with Israel please God and those who don’t stand with Israel displease Him. Christians want to please God; therefore, we want our Country to remain a friend to Israel. My dear, dear friends--- time is growing short. One of my friends made the comment that we have been in the end time ‘for about 2,000 years now.’ I couldn’t agree more--we are closer to the end than ever been before and we who believe what the Bible teaches about the end days feel a quickening--a kind of spiritual pressure building that almost feels like “fear” but that (I believe) is supposed to convict us into getting off our lazy backsides and doing the work which God prepared in advance for us to do.
