Can A Man Be Perfect?

By: Gene Keys

Can anyone live a perfect life? Can anyone be perfect? It has been my experience thus far that will disprove total perfection, however I am still learning and growing. If there is a such thing as perfection or a person who has attained it, it is a rarity. The lessons in wisdom that can be learned from such a person would be well worth the wait. But alas! Jesus Christ has already come to be an example of perfection in life and an atoning sacrifice for many!

The Apostle Paul teaches from experience the struggle with sin (Romans chapters 5-6) and the desire to live a life that pleases God. He admits that even in his maturity that a constant "tug of war" exist between his nature of sin, and his status of being a "slave to Christ". So, we are left with these questions:

Can a man struggle with sin and not fall prey to it? Does man posses the will and strength against falling into sin and perdition?

The answer to these questions: No.

How then can man adhere to such a call to be perfect when he has not the ability on his own? How do you reconcile this? Only by the power, grace, mercy and fear of the living God who possesses the strength you need to keep from sinning (Exodus 20:20). Jesus is the missing link to your puzzle.

Jesus is the example of human perfection and the hope to many who seek to imitate Him. However, because of the virgin birth, Jesus was never prone to sin except when He became sin on the cross. This indicates that even though Jesus was perfect, He did not come for the perfect, but for the imperfect to make them perfect. It is here where can make the distinction between perfect and being made perfect.

This view is justified in 4th chapter of Paul's letter to the church in Ephesus. Jesus, who came in perfection, taught his disciples who were not perfect, who struggled with sin until death, who struggled even with the concept of His death & mysteries of heaven; these men in turn became qualified to equip us (the saints) in order to bring the body of Christ into perfection (Ephesians 4:11-13 KJV). Jesus brings us a hope of salvation, but the testimony of the apostles and the fivefold ministry are relative as it ushers in practicality.
