Being an Overcomer

By: Ann Doupont

In Romans 12:21, we find how to overcome evil. It says to overcome evil with good.

In Revelation 12:11, we see that they overcame by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony, and that they loved not their lives unto death. The last part of this verse is usually overlooked.

In Acts 17:28, it is written that it is in Him we are to live, and move, and have our being. What does it mean to be “in Him?” We find some clues to that answer in 1 John 2:5 and following.

The answers we need are in God’s Word, but they’re not always in the same chapter and verse we’re reading at the time. We need the whole Word for the whole person.

As we read and meditate on and study our Bibles, we need to understand which parts to apply to our lives. The Holy Spirit who lives inside of every born-again believer will lead us to all truth if we are willing to allow this inner transformation to take place.

The key to our victory is in understanding and heeding the inner promptings of the Spirit and not overriding checks in our spirits. Knowing God’s character, and desiring to become like Him, will help in the endeavor of becoming an overcomer.

We can overcome sin as we follow the One who was sinless. Jesus was tempted in all points like we are, yet He never sinned. (See Hebrews 4:15.)

Knowing our own weaknesses, we can become strong in those areas. It’s often been stated that a person’s strongest area is also their weakest one.

As we think about what we’re thinking about and about the words we’re saying, we’ll better understand the challenges we face. Knowing ourselves well helps in the process of overcoming.

In Revelation 2 and 3, we find powerful motivators for living an overcoming life. A promise was given to each of the 7 churches listed there – but only for those who are overcomers. In addition to these rewards for living an overcoming life, Scripture tells us that it grieves God when we sin. We will feel that grieving as we are sensitive to His feelings.

God has promised to make a way out of our temptations. (See 1 Corinthians 10:13.) As we are willing, and we seek Him for His way out, He will show it to us; and as we follow that direction, we will be free.

As we continue to overcome evil, doing good instead by replacing bad habits with good ones, we become stronger, and have a sense of accomplishment that cannot be measured. Others see the change in us as we allow this inner change to take place with peace then ruling and reigning in our hearts, and they’re drawn to the One who made it all possible.

All that’s required of us is to love mercy, to do justly, and to live humbly (Micah 6:8). Understanding this, and doing it, is being an overcomer.
