An Overdose of Lactose

By: Ann Doupont

Many adults are lactose-intolerant. Lactose is found in milk and many are no longer able to tolerate it. Some scientists are saying that milk is for babies and that as we grow, we no longer need milk.

This morning, it came to mind that the same is true in the things of the spirit. When we are babies, we need a lot of milk. We are to sincerely desire it in order to grow.

But then, as we grow, if we try and live on just milk, we too can become sick (lactose-intolerant, spiritually speaking). We need meat to make us strong.

Jesus said that His “meat” was to do the work of the Father. The “milk” is referring to the Word of God. When we’re babes in Christ, we have much to learn about the Word. We need a lot of it. But then, we need to put into action what we’ve learned.

It’s not that we don’t need to stay in the Word, but the Holy Spirit is well able to bring back to our remembrance what we’ve studied so that it’s available when we need it…as we go about doing the works of Jesus. Jesus went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil, for God was with Him. We need to do likewise.

As we are doers of the Word and not hearers only, we will not be self-deceived.
