Weight Loss Lessons From Failing
Author : Cathy Morenzie
I read an interesting statistic the other day: out of 100 people who start something, only 7% will see it through to completion. Put another way, 93 out of 100 people will fail in their endeavour, and only 7 will achieve success. That sounds about right in the dieting world, where the industry itself agrees that 95% of most diets fail.
Given grim statistics like this, what are we supposed to do? The real question is, “Do you want to be one of the 93 – or one of the 7?”
If you want to be of the 7, then get your pen and paper ready to take action!
Here are lessons from successful people, which will be helpful to you. It’s no coincidence that these are biblical principles that God gave us thousands of years ago.
1. There is no such thing as failure. Successful people like Thomas Edison understood that in order to succeed, you need to fail first. I’ve read that it took him 10,000 experiments before he was able to make a light bulb work!
To remain successful in your weight loss efforts, you have to see every setback as an opportunity to learn about yourself and to strengthen your weaknesses. Jesus’s brother James teaches us that when we experience trials and temptations, we should consider it an opportunity for great joy (James 1:2). It’s in the failure that God will strengthen your character and mature you.
2. Never stay down. Many of us fail or mess up, and we spend so much time wallowing in our guilt, shame and self-pity that we continue to overeat not because of the our failure, but because we are trying to hide our shame. God still calls us righteous as long as we have the strength to get back up again (Proverbs 24:16). Imagine if Thomas Edison gave up after failing. You wouldn’t be reading this right now!
3. Take action, daily. It’s the small things that we do each day that will have the biggest payoffs. God delights in daily consistency. “Give us today our daily bread.” Matthew 6:11.
Today, begin to reframe the way you see your trials, temptations and setbacks. See them as an opportunity to learn, grow and move to higher levels in Christ.
